Nature's origami: Understanding folding helps to analyze the self-structuring of molecules, organs and surfaces.

چکیده
A ll life from viruses to blue whales relies on folding processes that can have fatal consequences when they go wrong. At the molecular level, folding is involved in DNA packaging and the fundamental process by which proteins assume their structural conformation and thereby function. At the cellular and tissue level, many plants depend on folding to prevent pollen grains from drying up through evaporation, while for animals, it plays a crucial role in the development of various organs, including the gut and the mammalian brain. At all these levels, recent progress has yielded a better understanding of both the role and the process of folding, as well as how and why it can fail. ...................................................... “. . . brain folding evolved because it was advantageous for neural processing of higher brain functions such as memory, perception, consciousness, language or thought.” ......................................................

متن کاملOrigami: Japanese Architecture and its Aesthetic Adaptability with the Western Theorists’ Point of View
In terms of specialized vocabulary, origami is a pattern with a fixed structure created by smooth folded surfaces. Today, the origami art pattern, or folded paper, has become a source of inspiration for architects, designers, and researchers. The definition of beauty in specialized lexicography includes the evolution of rational features, sounds, and concepts, and in a broader sense examines th...
متن کاملFreeform Origami Tessellations by Generalizing Resch’s Patterns
In this research, we study a method to produce families of origami tessellations from given polyhedral surfaces. The resulting tessellated surfaces generalize the patterns proposed by Ron Resch and allow the construction of an origami tessellation that approximates a given surface. We will achieve these patterns by first constructing an initial configuration of the tessellated surfaces by separ...
متن کاملEstimation of Folding Operation Using Silhouette of Origami
In this paper, we address a method for supporting origami folding process on origami. We focus on a folding operation with a view to understanding the state of origami. We estimate the folding operations by using one camera. The folding operation can be estimated by comparing origami shapes of before and after a folding operation. A silhouette model is introduced to grasp the correspondence of ...
متن کاملModelling of shape memory polymer sheets that self-fold in response to localized heating.
We report a nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) of the thermo-mechanical shrinking and self-folding behavior of pre-strained polystyrene polymer sheets. Self-folding is useful for actuation, packaging, and remote deployment of flat surfaces that convert to 3D objects in response to a stimulus such as heat. The proposed FEA model accounts for the viscoelastic recovery of pre-strained polysty...
